Non-

You can differentiate the difference between a Linear and a Non-Linear just by the power of the equation.

A linear equation is referred to a straight line with x to the power of 1 or can be given as y = mx + c, a straight line equation.

On the other hand, a non-linear equation will be given in an equation of a curve

(x to the power of 2) or in a cubic equations (x to the power of 3).

Linear - Linear Simultaneous Equations

When two linear equations intersect each other, it will only have one solution.

Linear - Non-Linear Simultaneous Equations

A linear - non-linear intersection is when a straight line intersect a curve.

1 or 2 solutions can be found when solving simultaneous equation.

1 solution - Straight line is TANGENT to the curve

2 solutions - Straight line cuts the curve at 2 DISTINCTIVE points

Non-Linear - Non-Linear Simultaneous Equations

A non-linear - non-linear intersection is when a 2 curves intersect each other.

1 or 2 solutions can be found when solving simultaneous equation.

There are 2 methods when solving simultaneous equations.

  • Substitution Method

  • Elimination Method

The easiest and the most common method is by substitution method.

Make one of the algebra as one of the subjects to be substituted into the other equation.
